The reason why disposable income in most European countries is so low is the tax burden. In virtually every country in the European Union, VAT is 20% or over. Fuel excises are around 50% of the pump price. Direct taxes on wages (whether personal tax or contributions for social security and health) add up to over 50% of gross wages.
Up until 20 years ago the trade-off was high taxes but free healthcare, education and high quality infrastructure. That trade-off is no longer the case. Europe is getting American level healthcare and infrastructure at 10x the tax burden.
Yes. I hear from dad in Belgium that healthcare is just as expensive there, and now I am retired, I see the price is reasonable here, where over there lots of items are not included. Most groceries are just as expensive or worse.
Until 25 years ago what we saw in Europe were Dallas, the bold and the beautiful, etc. All upper class. I find it a bit over the top to say that middle class Americans make 300k. I don't think more than a handful people here in middle Georgia make that much. And of course the houses in Europe are brick and last for hundreds of years (although the cost of renovation is astronomic) while here we live in cardboard houses and macmansions. But here, I could afford a cardboard house on an acre and there, I would have a brick house on 1/40th of an acre. Haha the portions! the refills! the parking lots at the stores! No pay for parking, not at a hospital, not at a retirement home, not at an attraction.. only at the airport.
Shops open all day, every day, some even at night... No I am not ever going back to Europe.
