That was crazy. Even if the old man never committed any war crimes being in the waffen SS is not a good look. I could see the shadow coming on the speaker’s face as he realized what it meant. Of course the coward Trudeau threw him under the bus.
You do have to feel bad for people caught b/w 2 evils - Hitler or Stalin, who would you choose? BUT if you choose Hitler for whatever reason and did no war crimes, you would still want to keep your mouth shut and not draw attention to yourself!
Yeah but maybe the old man had been in Canada for so long he didn’t imagine that anything would come of it. After the incident I went down a rabbit hole and found that way back in the eighties one of those Jewish Nazi hunters named a bunch of guys who were possibly war criminals, camp commanders or concentration camp officers etc. There were a ton of Ukrainians who emigrated to Canada after the war. Quite a few of them were in the waffen SS but scant evidence of war criminals. Some were deported for being in the country illegally, many were in regular army units, some were missing or deceased by the time of the investigation and a tiny number were considered possible war criminals but more evidence was deemed necessary by the Canadian government from the eastern bloc countries, which proved difficult at that time. So it’s not as if this issue wasn’t considered many years ago.
