Just to clarify, Wikipedia says US murder rate is 53rd highest (the top three are Jamaica, US Virgin Islands, South Africa). Wikipedia also says Chicago's murder rate is 14th highest among the 100 biggest American cities, with St. Louis, Baltimore, Detroit in the top three spots. I don't always rely on Wikipedia but these figures are consistent with other sources.
Chicago is a big city - I would imagine murders in certain neighbourhoods might be at third world levels... Same for St. Louis, Baltimore, Detroit etc... Other areas might still be fairly safe...
