In 1964 gas was a quarter a gallon. Today a 1964 quarter will buy more than a gallon of gas; its silver content is worth more than 5 of today's dollars. In 1965 the psychopath LBJ took the silver out of quarters. Any quarter minted after '64 has less than 6 cents worth of metal in it. FDR stopped the minting of gold coins (now worth 120 times their face value). LBJ stopped the minting of silver coins (now worth 20 times their face value). Nixon finished the job by cutting the dollar loose from gold, enabling the fed to crank up the printing presses and dilute the value of the dollar more and more until we eventually become Germany between the wars. They can't print gold. Buy gold. And silver. And lead to guard them.

As a boy in the 60s I could buy a Hershey bar capable of killing a diabetic for a nickel. While my dad told me of when, before WWII, he could get a cheeseburger for a nickel.
