Could a lettuce actually outlast Liz Truss? We look at the science

On the face of it, for many the obvious answer would be no, but in reality there is a good a chance a lettuce really could have the necessary staying power.

While loose leaves of lettuce may only have seven to 10 days of life in them, a whole head may just pip Truss. Uncut, tightly bound heads of lettuce, such as iceberg and endive can last one to three weeks in the fridge.

That estimate is based on the lettuce's estimated edible life, so depending on your definition of "outlast", the lettuce could be in the race for months.

Currently, the Daily Star's lettuce is wearing a wig and is next to a packet of pork scratchings. While this may appear like poor conditions for the leafy green, restaurants recommended against keeping lettuces in air tight containers. Instead, they use special perforated bins that allow for air circulation while it's held in the fridge…

My bet is also on the lettuce… Any UK readers who disagree with me?
